Historical Facts

1720: Marshal d'Estrées obtained the right to enjoy the estate and had an elegant pleasure pavilion built. The site quickly became a popular meeting place for the Parisian aristocracy.
1775: The Count of Artois, brother of Louis XVI and future Charles X, acquired the Bagatelle estate.
1777: Following a wager made by Marie-Antoinette, the Château de Bagatelle was built in just sixty-four days by architect François-Joseph Bélanger. The estate became the famous "Folie d’Artois."
1810: Napoleon I bought back Bagatelle and had it restored for his son, the King of Rome.
1835: The estate was acquired by the Marquess of Hertford, who undertook major transformations of the park and enriched his collections.
1872: Sir Richard Wallace had the Trianon de Bagatelle built by the architect Léon de Sanges and refurbished the château's main courtyard.
1905: The City of Paris acquires the estate. Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier is tasked with its rehabilitation and the development of its gardens.
1980: Creation of the Association of Friends of Bagatelle, which relaunches the cultural programming and contributes to the restoration of the château and the park.
2019: The Mansart Foundation is responsible for the restoration of the Château and the Trianon in preparation for their reopening to the public.
2021: Start of studies for the restoration work on the facades, roofs and joinery of the Château and the Trianon.
